Photo books - What a world we live in!

At Macworld this past January, I had the privilege of visiting with two representatives of an engineering firm. In the course of the conversation, they picked up one of our hard bound photo books. One gentleman commented to the other, “You know, we could make some of our proposals into books. How impressive would it be to a client to receive a full color hard bound book?” A $30 investment could help their firm land a large contract!

A book for under $30 is possible with great people and state of the art technology. Here at Mpix we are using the Kodak NexPress to print our books, and the quality is second to none!

On another note, our press team leaders, Neal Wheat and Steve Morrison, are always looking for creative ways to use photo books. A couple of cool ideas they have seen are children’s books and coloring books. Both of these ideas allow you to be creative in developing a family keepsake. Do you have a unique idea for a photo book? Please share it with us! Photo Books are not just for coffee tables. With today’s technology you can design your own book for less than $30, and have it printed and shipped in 24 hours or less…what a world we live in!

I have published numberous photo books, using numerous publishing houses.  The best by far is MPIX.  This is the only company that offers a choice in paper.  I love the weight of the pearl or linen pages.  The quality of publishing is also superb.

Just thought I'd save the time of trying other companies...when you find the best, you use the best...

Nice wite up by John Owens in an editorial in the August 2007 issue of Popoular Photography.  I guess I'll have to try one of these.

Question....

When Mpix prints the book, do they color correct the photos like the option on standard prints?  I'm wondering how much post processing I must do to ensure that the photos on a page are uniform.

Thanks for your help.

Mpix does not color correct the images used for books, or any of the other press products.  This is different from photographic prints where color correction is available.

since this is a different process, how does the quality and color reproduction of your books differ from your prints?

There will be some differences in the quality of the books and our photographic prints. Our Mpix Press products are printed on card stock papers using a CMYK printing process, so the quality will not be the same as an image printed on photographic paper. We have found that we are still able to produce high quality prints with this process.

Are there any plans to allow for more than 50 pages? I'm looking to print a book within the 100's, 200's pages. Or can I have a custom order for orders this big?

I'm not sure if this is an appropriate question but have any of you heard of the "International Open Amateur Photography Contest"?

I entered several photos in a photo contest. Only two of my photos were picked but the offer came with an opportunity to buy the coffee table book. Some statements sound evasive, yet the small print claims you do not have to buy anything.

I'm honored but skeptical.

Can anyone answer this?  I designed a couple of books where I loaded images from 1 of my external hard drives.  I disconnected the external drive while I had the software up/book opened and it looks like the link to the images is broken.  Now when I open the designed book, it says the images are loading but never does.

Thoughts?

Hi

I have printed books with every service but Mpix. I am interested in using the service but I have a few questions:

1.

Image specifications.

Can you tell me the exact image specs for your software so that when i import the image, it is to proper size / scale? I need ppi and dimensions.

2.

Background images

I think this is very interesting to me. I have tried it already and again, because my images are not spec'd to the exact pixel, height and width dimensions of the software, things are not aligning properly. As best I can tell, I do not have the option of positioning or scaling background imagery so I would like to know the specs so that when I import them, they will be where I want them at the specs the software wants. Hope this makes sense.

i have heard a lot of positive things about your books so I am excited to try them out. I hope to get the best of both your services and the flexibility to design the books in my own software (CS3) by exporting the layout to your spec and importing it as a JPG for your software.

Thanks for your help. I posted here because I gotta believe these are specs lots of other people might want access to.

Thanks again

Andrew

Hi all,

Mpix sent me a speedy answer to my inquiry. For an 11x8.5 book they recommedn the following spec if you want full bleed images:

11.5x9 @ 300ppi

Hope this helps other people. Mpix was right on top of my questions and even shot back with good inquiries for further detail. I am looking forward to receiving the books I just ordered!
