  • Apply Movie Effects to your Photos

Well, summer is coming to an end and with it we are losing the longer days, blazing hot sun, and, of course, the big summer blockbuster movies.  We now have to wait out the lull before the end-of-the-year logjam of Oscar hopefuls comes to entertain us.

The folks over at Photojojo have a treat to fill this void.  They have compiled a list of 11 tutorials from around the Web that help you apply famous movie effects to your photos.  Whether you're more of a Pirates of the Caribbean fan or you would rather sit down with a good chick-flick, there's plenty of fun for everyone.  Just be sure to not use the wrong effect on your clients' photos.  Not all brides are going to want to commemorate that special day with their picture made into a Scarface poster.

  • How to Choose a Projector

At some point, we all need (or just want) to show our work to audiences that requires something bigger than a computer screen or a print.  However, since we know that you are concerned with the quality of how your work is displayed, it is important to find the right projector for the job.

The folks over at ProjectorPeople have published an excellent article about projectors specifically for photographers.  The article has a thorough, yet readable, overview of projector basics, color differences and concerns, and some keys for how to get the best features while staying within your budget.

The article also contains a number of practical tips that don't always jump out at you when you are just reading through product specs.  Some of the tips might even save you some money.  For example:

Quick Tip: In reality it's not likely you would notice a significant difference between a 1,000,000:1 and a 500,000:1 contrast ratio projector unless you were comparing them in a cave at the center of the earth (or somewhere that no ambient light reached). In real life situations, with ambient light, even the difference between a 2000:1 and 10,000:1 can be inconsequential.

If you have been looking to buy a projector, then this is a great read for framing your search.  If you aren't looking for a projector, then you might bookmark this page for a later date - it's a great reference.

  • Photo Assignment

I am constantly amazed at the ingenuity and creativity of the photographers who actively participate on the Mpix Forum.  Certainly there is a lot of sharing of images within the Mpix Forum community. One thread in particular is very popular for sharing of photos – "The Photo Assignment Thread" at http://community.mpix.com/forums/14.aspx

In this thread the Forum participants create an assignment, capture a great image, post it on the forum, give feedback on the images, and vote for a winner.

The recent topic was "Cultural Composition."   Lowry Wilson, of New Albany, MS took top honors with the entry "American Classic."

Check out all the great entries at  http://community.mpix.com/forums/t/48474.aspx

I encourage you to work on one of the upcoming assignments.  It is fun, and we would love to see your work!

  • The verdict is in: Square Hard Cover Photo Books are a hit!

In early August, we introduced two new square-sized hard cover books to our line of MpixPRESS products. In just over a month, both the 10×10” and the 5×5” books have become very popular with customers. In their inaugural month, orders for 10×10” books were nearly as high as 8.5×11”, which has been a long-time favorite among customers. We are excited that you like the new square books so much and we look forward to seeing the new ways you are using them. Thanks!
