  • Western States Convention...One day left!

Monday, February 25th, the Mpix crew of John Rank and Matt Miller will be wrapping up the final day in Pasadena at the 55th annual Western States Convention.

Monday is open to the public, and we would love to see some of our existing customers stop by the booth. The new Bonded Cover book and Standout have been very popular at this show.  The show runs from 10:00am until 2:30pm.

Look us up at booth 222 and enter for a chance to win $500 in free prints!

  • Mpix meets up with Scott Kelby and the Photoshop Guys

Yesterday the Mpix team spent the day with Scott Kelby, Kevin Agren, and  Photoshop Guys - Matt Kloskowski and Dave Cross. These guys are some of the hottest commodities in the photography community, and after being with them, I know why. They are fun, energetic, and passionate about what they do.  Scott had John Rank and I laughing within minutes of meeting him. When Kevin, Matt, and Dave joined us minutes later, the energy went to a whole new level. My first revelation was that with these guys, what you see is what you get.

Scott and the guys were blown away with what they saw here at Mpix. After meeting several team members and touring the lab, they talked about all the products and services we have to offer, our efficiency, and our turnaround. However, what impressed them the most was the passion and care that they witnessed. In the late afternoon, Scott and the guys talked to several of our coordinators and digital artists. He opened his talk with, “You all have something very special here…you care about preserving prints for your customers.” And then we quickly saw first hand how knowledgeable these guys are about Photoshop.

Scott is one of those guys that eats at a great restaurant, and tells the world they need to eat there too (ask him about Carmines-NY on 44th street some day). However, he has made his reputation educating Photoshop users and photographers on the good, the bad AND the ugly. Scott left us saying, “Mpix is very good…and until today, I didn’t realize how good.”

If you want to learn more about Photoshop, you must check these guys out at Photoshop User TV. Better yet, consider joining the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. The annual fee is $99, and it is money well spent. If you have any feedback on Scott, the NAPP, or Kelby Training, we would love to hear from you.

  • Ready...Set...Action

This week we had our good friend, and famous professional photographer and author-Rick Sammon, in the lab to film some new short movies for Mpix.  Rick is a talented guy both behind the camera and in front of it.  We solicited the help of many of the Mpix team, and believe me when I say 'we have some actors in the group'.  Our fearless John Rank was in the lion's share of the movie, and he stood and delivered!  Good job, John.

Stay tuned for short movies that talk about tips for making great prints, how to create photo books and our wide range of products and services. We are excited with what we have going here at Mpix, and continue to look for fun, creative ways to share our message.

  • Happy Birthday Mpix Forums!

Three years ago today, the Mpix online community began as a small group of staff members registered for the online forums that you now see. Only thirty-two people signed up the first week, quite amazing considering the 10,321 users the forums now boast.

Much has changed since February 14th, 2005. The forums are now complemented by the blog that you are reading, as well as official Mpix forum meet-ups, contests and help topics.

Thank you to each and every one of the people that help to make the Mpix online community one of the most visited and active photography forums on the Internet!

  • Bonded Cover Books Are Here!

You have been asking for it - now they are here!!!  In a recent blog post, John Rank showed our new Bonded Cover Photo Books being tested.  The production guys are now satisfied and ready to go.  These books feature an image bonded to the cover (hence the name Bonded Cover).  At PhotoPlus and Imaging USA this was one of the most asked for items and we are excited to make them available.

The new book software needs to be downloaded to have access to this product.  Simply go to your program and check for the latest version.  Then install the new version.

A tip - be sure to use a high resolution file for the printed cover!

Here is more information about our books from our web site...

  • A Standout Product!

Standouts are now available from Mpix!

My daughter has been creating collages of our family vacations.  It is so cool to have a 20x30" print.  The problem is that she has designed six of them (yes, we love our family getaways), and they are taped up on our cabinet in the utility room. As much as we like being reminded of our vacations when we are doing the laundry, we have the feeling that these prints deserve more.  Standouts from Mpix are the perfect solution for these special prints!

Do you have some images that you have been intending to make into large prints?  Once you have the prints are you going to frame them?  Or maybe you go with a Gallery Wrap that comes ready to hang?  Our new Standout product gives you another option for less money.  Standouts are prints mounted on 1.5" Gatorfoam.  They have a nice clean finished trim that provides a distinctive look.  What's cool about Standouts is that they can be easily mounted on a wall or can stand on their own.

I know our family collages are going to end up as Standouts on our basement wall.  Let us hear of other ideas for this new product.

  • Custom bonded covers are coming soon!

Testing is almost completed on the new bonded covers. More updates are coming!

  • A good use for old film canisters?

The folks over at MoMA have a great idea for how to use those old film canisters.  You could certainly build your own too, but these just look so nice.

Of course, here at Mpix we have better ideas on what you can do with your film.

  • Carey Schumacher shares some great photo tips

Carey Schumacher of San Diego Barefoot Memories recently had the opportunity to share some great photography tips on San Diego's Fox6.  She discusses how to get the right angle, the right light, the right zoom, and, of course, how to get the best prints (thanks for the plug, Carey!).

Carey has consistently been dedicated not only to her craft but also educating others along the way.  If you haven't seen her work, then check it out on her Web site.  Also, check out an earlier blog post from Carey here.

Thanks, Carey.  Keep up the good work!
