Ok I finaly have some time to get out today and get my image, but I want to make sure I'm understanding the rule here correctly this time.

It appears to me that none of the images posted so far follow the rules? Most are 2 seperate images, which is not a diptych.

The rules also say that you much use the entire origial image nothing added or taken away in which a couple appear to just have a thick line down the middle that actually hides part of the original image so not all of the original image is visible. Am I being too picky here?

Well this is what I'm asking though JC the black line down the middle takes out the chimney between the 2 gables, the roof eaves between the 2 and most of the table on the front porch. So is this OK to do that or Not. I think it's a great image, and probably gets my vote so far, but does it completely follow the rules of the contest?

I haven't looked at any more in detail other than the one i commented on but if any part of the base image isn't in the diptych then it doesn't meet the requirements.

OK, gotcha now..... google was unclear to this but I do see that in the directions. I suppose I could just lessen the opacity of the black so that the image could still be seen below it but still demarcate the two. Or simply cut the image and move it within the black frames.

Hmmmmmmm

Ok, I got the picture I want to use, but I don't get how to divide it into 2 separate pictures with a border, will someone please direct me to how I should do it? Thank you so much!

The idea of the assignment was to teach compositional rules but also to make you think in advance before you shoot. The final image should include all pixels that are in the base image and the demarcation line should be wide enough that you can isolate each image from the other.

I checked out the link you have and they all seem to talk about combining 2 pictures to make it. Should I copy the picture so I have 2 of them and then use those to create it? Thank you.

I took it to mean that you couldn't leave out any elements in the picture. I never saw anything about pixels. Oh well.

From the assignment thread -

"So, the base image for the diptych must be 1:2 format but when split into the diptych you can format however you like but the entire original base image must be used. You can't add anything or take anything away from the base image."

The reason is because the area you are hiding with the line of demarcation, could effectively cover up an area of the image that might not be so pleasing for the composition. If the line dividing the two images was... hmmmm... say...... 100 pixels, then just putting that line through the image without separating the two images, would totally change the entire composition.

You still have time to correct your entries.

How you create it is up to you. All of the parameters are in the original assignment thread.

However, the easiest way...... create the image first..... then figure out where you are going to split it...... make the split then put those two on a new canvas that meets the parameters.

The hard part here is figuring out where to cut the image so that you effectively have two different images from a single image. The overall concept isn't difficult but requires you to think in advance.

I went to the link and they all talked about using 2 pictures. I have a PS book by Scott Kelby and Matt Klokowski that shows how to make a multi-photo look from one photo, but my photograph wasn't re-sizing correctly when I tried putting it in the box. I think this assignment has me beat, this is the photograph I would have used if I could have figured it out.....

Ann, I took some liberties. There has to be plenty of other crops too. I couldn't do it in Picasa at work, but you could do it so the right side (about 1/3rd) is just the water, no birds, and the left side (about 2/3rds) has the birds.

Thank you, Dave! So just to be clear on the steps, you cropped it into 2 different pictures, then put them together like the examples Lowry had? Thanks again! (the right side has a bird, but it's flying :) )

First I cropped the big photo using a 10x20 crop ratio ( guestimating how big it needed to be to have just the 3 birds on the right frame) then I sub cropped that new10x20 ratio into 2 squares.

I really need to figure out how to get larger images upload here. I had to shrink mine down so small you can hardly see it.
