Nikon D300 - shot on raw file large size. Camera says 4288x2848 pixels but when I transferred to windows pc and open in Gimp, says 160x120 pixels. Help! What's up?

Sounds like it is opening a JPEG thumbnail instead of the actual RAW file. I am not familiar with GIMP but you need software that can handle RAW files from your camera specifically. Lightroom, Aperture, Adobe Camera RAW or the software that came with your camera is what you probably need. There are others hat will work as well.

Picasa can also handle RAW files. It doesn't do anything impressive as far as editing them, or taking advantage of their RAW details. But it can show them and gives basic color and exposure control. Then lets you export full resolution jpegs.

I struggle.

I open my RAW files in Nikon NX2, convert to jpeg, then open in GIMP when I need to use it.
