    Gray Baby...Rolleiflex

My hubby works for a company that runs a transfer station (he drives the truck from the trnasfer to the landfill)...one day he brought home a really old leather camera bag full of stuff, included was a camera

From what I can find it is a 1957, Rolleiflex, Gray Baby, 4x4, double lens....I have no idea if it works or is even good.. There were several other items in the bag, flash, power pack, light meter, .....

Anyone know how to use one of these?

If it all operable, you have a nice little score.

the camera is a bit tricky to find film for but it is out there.

the value of the "baby" rolies is not as good as the "big" ones but is till a nice collectible.

the flash is a classic Vivitar 283 and it looks like most of the accessories.

that 110 volt power supply turns it into a studio flash.

there is even the VP1 module that will let you control the power output of the flash manually!

perfect starter for some Strobist style off camera flash work ( was there a filter and lens kit too? )

someone was a serious photographer to put that all together.

if you dont want to keep it, you might be able to bank a C note or better for it as a set.

It's a classic alright !!!  Very cool find.  Congratulations.  Here's a couple of links you might find useful.

http://www.digitaltruth.com/store/cart/127-Roll-Film-p-1-c-58.html   Sells Efke B&W and infrared 127 film.  I use Efke all the time, it's great stuff.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/shop/336/Other_Film_Formats_110_127_620_828.html   B&H in New York sells Efke, among other brands of 127 and 620 size film.  I'm sure B&H also has the appropriate filters for that camera as well including color negative film and I believe slide film too. Their sales staff can refer you to other places that handle other types of 127 as well.  There used to be a place in Colorado that respooled 127 and 620 film off larger sizes. Can't remember though but it wasn't too long ago.  Also check sources by doing a search at Photo.net and APUG.org, the Analog Photographers User Group. It's a great resource for those of us (including me) who still shoot on film.

Processing?   http://www.filmforclassics.com/  You can do it yourself on Patterson adjustable reels and their tanks that cost just a few bucks, along with a few basic processing chemicals for b&w film that many camera stores, including B&H sell and have readily available.

Amanda: Before ordering film for it, you might take it down to a local camera repair shop and have them check it's operating features like shutter release, speeds, film advance, etc. and maybe give it a cleaning and lube.  Rolleis are great cameras.  For a long time, this camera's bigger brother, the Rollei 120 film models, were industry standards in press photography usually with Honeywell (Potato Masher) strobes, wedding shooters and portrait photographers like Philipe Halsman, among others, used them a lot.

If you want to find it's approx. value, KEH.com might be a good place to look. The Vivitar 283 is still a usable strobe if it works.  I use the 285HV models.  I don't think the camera has a hot shoe so you need to use it with a sync cord from strobe to camera.  Sync cords are available from B&H or Paramount cords in New York. http://www.paramountcords.com/

    Enjoy and be well !

    Thanks for the replies.

We don't have a local camera shop, closest one is about an hour north of here, and I'm not even sure they do repairs. :(

    I'll do some research and see what I can get accomplished with the little jem.  I did figure out how to open it and see through it (that's a plus).  The viewfinder looks pretty dirty.  Lucky me it did have a manual in the bag, so I'll be reading up a little bit;

looking again, it appears that whoever bought that flash, also bought every available accessory for it too.

lucky you! running down those bits and pieces can be difficult.
