    5D MkII and DPP

Is anyone else using DPP to edit 5D MkII files?  When I try to pull up the large, single-image view, it takes a minute or two to load, vs. the almost instant preview for the old 5D and 40D.  I have the most recent version.  Any idea why this is happening?  I can't work at this speed, but haven't found another program that even shows the MkII files (have no desire to upgrade to CS4, don't need that much power).

Any idea why DPP is so slow with the MkII?  Anyone know how Lightroom does with MkII files?

it's twice the file size so it takes longer to render a preview. (remembering that the thumbnail is generated by an small embedded jpeg in the raw file, but there is no preview embedded in a raw file and one has to be rendered in whatever software you use) if you want to speed it up you can in tools, preferences and on the general tab click on high speed, you will loose the ability for NR  but not everybody uses dpp noise reduction.

this is an advantage that adobe bridge/lightroom has over dpp, it renders previews when the folder is loaded rather then as the image is opened. so while it will take bridge longer to load the folder it will render the image faster when viewed

I use DPP (but not a 5D MKII), and I know what you're talking about. A handy little feature in the new version is the "edit window / main window" button (in the upper left-hand corner).

Shift-select a handful of shots (anywhere from 3 to 30) and click the edit window button. This will open all of them up, and while the first one might take a few swconds to render, the others will render while you work on the first one.

Also, check here for some Canon DPP tutorial videos: http://www.usa.canon.com/content/dpp2/index.html

I'm shooting in small RAW so I know it isn't the file size.  The 40D has larger files than what I am shooting in, and they pull up right away.  The MkII files do not.

I only edit one and then batch apply to the others in that group.  I have no real need to open a bunch at once.  I am very handy in DPP, I've been using it for three years and know most of the little tricks and stuff.  There is nothing I've found that is improving the load speed of these files, though.

Do you ever use the "quick-view" (Alt-Q) tool?

I'm just wondering but I always do that first (to sort out the bad ones). I'm wondering if that makes a preview file, which then in turn makes my edit window open much faster.

Quick view takes 15-20 seconds to pull up a single image from the MkII.  Full edit window takes about 45 seconds per image.

Old 5D and 40D take a second or two, tops.

Even 15 seconds is a long time to wait when processing this many images.

I'm going to check out Lightroom again.  I liked it but it was fairly slow on the processing, and I was hoping to speed up my workflow with whatever I purchase next.

I'm really not trying to nag, I'm just curious to see if you can isolate the problem.

Have you tried to load one of your 40D files lately? If it loads fine, then the problem is your MkII files. If it hesistates, then you might have a problem with DPP or need more memory.

Let us know what you decide (I've been conptemplating Lightroom or Bibbel, but I really don't want to learn a new program right now).

I have a set of mixed 40D, old 5D, and MkII files in front of me, and am loading them all at various points.  It is ONLY the MkII files that are posing a problem.

I tried the demo of Bibble 4, and they do not support the MkII.  Downloaded the beta 5 and it isn't recognizing the MkII files, either, even though it claims to support them.  Bibble was a ton faster at the actual processing of my other files, but w/o MkII support, it is worthless to me.

My machine is only a few months old and has 3GB of RAM on a dual core processor.  I haven't had any issues until I got the MkII.

Have you tried FastStone Image Viewer with the files? I don't know if it supports them or not, but I use it all the time with my 50D. It is a great and fast way for looking at the files. It won't convert RAW, but is a good way to get rid of the bad files, and it is free.

I havent read the whole thread but,

did you install the DPP that cam with your new 5DMK2 ? or are you using the version that you had before ?  If you havent already done it I would recommed installing the new one, and if you have done this try reinstalling it just in case to see if that doesnt help.. you never know.  After that contact canon.

What Scott said, except more and louder. I've said it 100 times.....I'd give up my indoor toilets before I gave up Lightroom.

I'm using DPP with full size 5D Mk II RAW files and they jump to full size in an instant.  I have 4G of memory...that might help.

No, I haven't.  I can cull from my thumbnails, but need the full screen for closer looks and to edit.  I can't edit in DPP, it takes too long to pull individuals up.

I have 3gb on a dual core processor, so I don't think that is the problem.

I downloaded the MkII updates to DPP from the Canon website (do this every time a new body is released that I or a second shooter are using).  I currently have the most up-to-date version on my computer.

Scott & Chris, Lightroom is pretty quick with them, then?  I had the demo downloaded but it expired before I got my MkII!

So, because of this discussion I downloaded Lightroom 2 and I just want to say...

    O..........M............G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cannot believe the results that I'm getting, and I'm sure that I'm not even scratching the surface. But my pictures just look better!

Sorry, Wendi, don't want to jack your thread. I thought you might like to know that LR actually runs a little slower on my machine, especially when cycling through photos, but the controls are awsome.

Oh, I know the controls are awesome.  I played with the demo for a month.  Just bought it.
