Is there a way to prevent people from copying images from my website?
I maintain my own website. . Is there a way to make the images copyrighted or something so people can't right click my images? I have Cs2 photoshop. I have my logo on the images, but don't want people taking them at all. Your help would be appreciated.

There is a way to disable right click on a picture. I do not know how though. Although anyone who wants to copy your picture will find a way. The best way to protect your images is to: 1) make them small enough files that they are useless for printing, and dropping the dpi down to 125dpi, 2) place a conspicuous "PROOF" mark a cross the image. To disable right click just do a quick Google search for "disable right click." You'll find javascript to just cut and paste into the header of your html. Also, the ideal web res for files is 72 dpi... no reason to go higher. Lastly, if you use flash it is impossible to right click on an image. But, that's a lot more work, slower loading, and some people just don't care for it. I'd say, unless your pics are something that will be in high demand and likely posted all over the web, don't worry about it.

Thanks everyone. I will give it a try. I was wanting to try online proofing, so I could be home with my family at night. Your info has been helpful. There is a company that will do the flash for me for 65 a month. After reading a lot of posts here, I find there is software I can purchase myself for a one time fee. I already have a fee for my regular website. Weighing my options. I want people to be able to order with paypal.

Try a site like pictology.com. Or pictage, or collages. Pictology allows you to have two events up at a time though with no monthly fee. Not bad if you're just starting out. They handle the proofing and payment processing, you fill the order.

You can make a watermark across your images on a different layer in photoshop and make the opacity lower than 100% maybe like 50% where they can see the image but the watermark is clearly visible. Also some good sites out there that host and have watermarks. Not sure if you have heard of smugmug or not. Just an idea.

Re: Is there a way to prevent people from copying images from my website?
Here is the no right click i have on my website. Just copy and paste the code into your HTML and change what you want the popup warning window to say. It can be seen at my my site at www.LTXSPORTS.com. Althuoght i would also recomend making the images small, low quality, and watermarking them to prevent people from highlighting and copying them to the clipboard to paste them somewhere else or doing a print screen. </div> <script language=JavaScript> var message="© LTXSPORTS.com. Please don't steal."; function click(e){ if (document.all) { if (event.button == 2) { alert(message); return false; } } if (document.layers) { if (e.which == 3) { alert(message); return false; } } } if (document.layers) { document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN); } document.onmousedown=click; </script> <div> <script language="JavaScript1.2"> //Disable select-text script (IE4+, NS6+)- By Andy Scott //Exclusive permission granted to Dynamic Drive to feature script //Visit http://www.dynamicdrive.com for this script function disableselect(e){ return false } function reEnable(){ return true } //if IE4+ document.onselectstart=new Function ("return false") //if NS6 if (window.sidebar){ document.onmousedown=disableselect document.onclick=reEnable } </script> THanks, -Joey

Am I the only one that finds sites with disabled right click really frustrating though? I always have a few different tabs open and like to jump around. I leave pretty quick if I can't right-click. Oh, for watermarking, the "place" command in CS2 is a lifesaver in building an action.

Re: Is there a way to prevent people from copying images from my website?
Of course, everyone knows you can use ctrl + PrtScn to capture the whole page to the clipboard - then open Photoshop and a new document and use ctrl + V to paste that image to Photoshop. Then crop to the size you want it to be and... There is no way to keep people from copying anything they want to copy. Some people, called counterfeiters, even manage to copy money. And copying money is illegal... Now, I guess if you could find a way that people couldn't even so the image on the internet, you'd be able to keep them from copying it. That'd about defeat the purpose of taking the image though...

Re: Is there a way to prevent people from copying images from my website?
I'll add my 2 cents and restate that most everyone is correct in stating that "If they want your picture bad enough they will get it."! But I'll let you know the right click isn't recognized by Mozzilla/netscape browsers so before going to that hassle you might just follow a simple rule. Keep the shot at 72-100dpi and 40-80-KB and watermark it. because if they want it they will get it and this way for them to res it up to being usable then removing the watermark will be far more effort than it's worth for most designers. Those on my space generally don't care on what it looks like just so they can have a free background picture. Maybe we should target this youth oriented market and rent them our pictures for a few cents per month....

Even with right-click disabled, it is possible to drag a picture to your desktop or view source and go directly to the picture. Flash prevents this, but everyone has the ability to take a screenshot. Small, low-res with a watermark seems safest to me.

Re: Is there a way to prevent people from copying images from my website?
If your website is html instead of flash, just create a blank layer over the entire page. It will not stop them from taking the image if they really want it, but it will slow them down. When they right click on the picture, it won't have the regular options of "save image as...." etc.

Re: Is there a way to prevent people from copying images from my website?
I used to watermark our image with our logo. But after seeing our photos pop up on people's MySpace pages, I realized two things. First, a lot of people don't mind your watermark, and will still put your photos on their web pages. Second, by watermarking with a logo, if someone saw my photos and wanted to find my website, they would then have to do a search for my business name, etc (a PITA). So I then changed my watermark to my website name instead of our logo. Now if anyone sees the photos and wants to find our website, no problemo. So now when someone puts a watermarked photo on their website, it's just free advertising. ;)

I heard of people putting a transparent .png image over their images, but I am not sure how to do that. When a person trys to save the image, it will save a blank image. Maybe somebody here knows how to do that.

Throw a watermark on each image, dont post images any bigger than 400 pixels wide, save as JPEG in a quality of 5 or 6. Some of the things I do. And I tried to print one of these images, and it looked horrible!!

I agree with joshranwest. If your pictures are small and only of medium quality they won't produce a good print - so the thief won't be satsfied with the print.

Oh no... You're not the only one. I make heavy use of the "back" menu item under the right mouse button and I cuss the web designer every time I encounter a blocking script.

Re: Is there a way to prevent people from copying images from my website?
All my seniors images have the large word Proof on them on my website. The kids do download them to put them on myspace and to get their friends' opinions. I have no problem with this. It is a part of life and I'm trying to compromise. I figure that it is free advertising. I don't think they can print the images and even if they did, the large proof would look ridiculous.

Re: Is there a way to prevent people from copying images from my website?
I agree with a low res, watermarked pic. People love to put their pictures on myspace, facebook, etc. My first senior girl put her three faves on. With my studio name on their, two friends contacted me because they loved her pics. They had already gotten their pics done somewhere else, but really liked my style. So, there ya go! Free advertising. I have decided to change my watermark to my website, though. It think that is a great idea!

Contact those people and remind them of the copyright law, and the fact that it's a federal offence.

Re: Is there a way to prevent people from copying images from my website?
No there is not. Those right click scripts ARE annoying for people who right click to open things in a new window. (I am a right click surfer). And there are other ways to get to an image: If one is savvy and can read code (even Flash if it uses XML to deleiver the images) the path to the images can be found. And all anyone needs to do is a print screen anyway to grab anything off a webpage. Print screen and do a crop and they have it. Even little point and shoot cameras come with some type of photo editing software so more people know how to crop and image now. The best you can do is put a visble mark on your pictures and hope that someone else isn't good with a clone tool.

Re: Is there a way to prevent people from copying images from my website?
Joey, I pasted your "no right click" script into my html but it didn't seem to have any affect. I can still right click on an image and save it. Can you be a little more specific as to exactly where in my html code I'm supposed to paste this code? Thanks.
