    Portfolio Building Workshop!

Just thought that I'd post this in here in case anyone happens to live within driving distance of central Texas.  Our studio's conducting a workshop next month focusing on bridal posing.  We'll provide a model, designer gown, and nice location as well as one on one instruction.  It will be a great way to build up some portfolio images too.

This is the first of three in a series.  This first will be with a size 8 model, the second will be with a size 14-16, and the last will be with a size 22 model.  Each will focus on the best techniques for gorgeous portraits...

You can check out info here: http://bellesphotography.com/workshop.htm

We're also considering conducting some classes in the Dallas-Fortworth  area later in the year.  If you'd be interested drop me a note while we're gaging interest...

Wow, I could really benefit from knowing how to shoot larger brides.  I wish wish wish I were closer!  I think it is great that you chose models that are not model size!  Please share your tips and your work after the workshop for those of us who are so far away!

Definitely... In fact we've got as .pdf we use to train interns and 2nd shooters.  Maybe we'll make it available one day...  I'll be sure to post some images from the workshop though!

Well for those of us not in that area (I'm up in New England). Maybe we can use the photo critique forum to post links to galleries of wedding/portrait shoots and everyone can chime in with "constructive critisisim". I've only shot a few weddings and have several more secheduled so far for this year. I for one would love to hear from other photogs on whether I'm hitting the mark or not. Especially what I could do to improve.

I've been told I have the eye for photography but getting pro opinion as to whether or not they agree would be interesting.  Maybe TxMensan can give his professional opinion along with others..

Of course this is a great idea!  And it's one of the strengths of an online forum, like MPIX.

The benefit of a workshop - be it ours or any one of the many others that take place around the country - is the direct one-on-one instruction, and the calling of attention to points  that others may miss.  Sometimes it helps to have someone with a fine art background point out the very intentional decisions that they have to make when composing a work on a blank canvas.  Often, us photographers fail to fine tune what we see in front of us... Me as much as anyone!  But, through intentional posing you can make a bride look like she's lost 15lbs, without photoshop...

I'm sure that there are some great workshops up in New England that you may want to keep an eye out for.  The learning experience from a good one is incredible, and you can always build a nice portfolio at these things.

Oh, and if there are a lot of people in other areas that are interested in this kind of thing - feel free to speak up.  We routinely shoot all over the country and conduct workshops wherever the demand exists.  Typically we find an area studio to serve as host.

South Dakota, Huh?  I thought it was lonely here in West Texas... I can only imagine SD!

Here's the poster that we're circulating.  We have an awesome person in-house that normally does albums, but it works out great for these kinds of things too.  I love the layout on this...

I would LOVE to go, but maybe next year when I have a bit more experience and have DSLR. Big Smile

My parents and a brother and sister live in Austin, so I drive down that way a lot through the year.  Please keep us posted, as I really would like to go after I have a more professional camera and more photo shoots under my belt!!!

Maybe next year you could plan ON my birthday (Feb 7th)!! Stick out tongue

Don't be so sure, we have had at least five posters on here in the last few days from sodak, not to mention all the Nebraskians... you might be surprised at who would show up...

I am in eastern South Dakota, litterally a hop across the river from Nebraska, I suppose if you drew a circle around Yankton 90 miles out you would have Sioux Falls, Sioux City, Norfolk, Yankton, Mitchell... about close to 300K people I would bet... sioux falls is at 150K Norfolk, mitchell yankton are all in that 10-20K range, Sioux City is over 100K not a bad area....get to stay rural, but keep some people around too...

I bet you would be surprised how many photogs would show up....

If you come to DFW, yes, I'd love some new images for my portfolio.

I'm only a few hours from D/FW area too, I'd be interested in a workshop held there.

    Re: Portfolio Building Workshop!

Huh.  Maybe we can put something together somewhere else after this next one...  Generally, it takes 12-15 people to make the travel worthwhile.  Generally speaking, we don't make much of anything off of these - it's just a matter of covering costs (travel, model, location fee, etc.).  So I'll add South Dakota and definitely DFW to the list of possible venues for future dates.

We try to make sure that the setting is in a church or chapel so that they work out as portfolio shots.  Then we want to make sure we have enough time and space (and few enough people) to do a lot of one-on-one stuff.  But generally these things are fun and everybody learns a lot - it is soooo much easier to slim a bride by posing her instead of photoshopping later!
