    Raw photo software

Bibble pro was recommended to me by one person, adobe by another.  I'm a novice with a Nikon D50 and would like to take some photos without flash, etc.  Any sugestions for this newbie?

    Thanks,

    Ken

    Re: Raw photo software

One of the cool things about most RAW software is that they offer free trials. If you don't have Photoshop, you can download a 60 day trial version. It has Camera Raw as part of the package. It's pretty good and a lot of people use it. I've personally settled on Bibble Lite. Its very powerful, especially when using some of the available plugins. I find that I can do 95% of my post processing with it and PS for the other 5%. It saves me a LOT of time. Bibble Pro adds work queues, support for dual core processors, and a few other things that I felt I didn't need. Bibble also has one of the best support communities in the buisness. Even the software engineers personally answer questions on thier forum. They have a free trial that can be extended simply by asking.

There are some other. One is Adobe Lightroom. They don't seem to have a free trial available yet. It's not cheap, but I used the Beta3 and Beta 4 for about 6 months and I thought it was pretty good. Another is Capture 1. I haven't used it for a while so I can't say too much about it. But they also offer a free trial. A few more are Apple Aperture (Mac only), Breeze Browser Pro, UFRaw, and SilkyPix. The last two are open source and freeware.

Try them out and see which one works best for you.

I used them and it is a good program.   it is free.

Note: It was bought by adobe so I am not sure it the 2006 version is still out there.

but it is a light program for your ram and free.

Raw Shooter Essentials is no longer availble. but Adobe does offer a free 30 trial for Lightroom. It's just not on thier Photoshop Family page.

You can get the RSE program from somebody who has it... I can email it to you if you can't find it anywhere else. I use RSE for all my RAW conversions. Love it.

Thanks for the offer, but I have a copy. I used RSE exclusively until Adobe bought Pixmantec. I played with the LR betas for a while. I liked the RAW conversion capability, hated the DAM features (not even close to ACDSee Pro and iMatch). And now I use Bibble Lite. It's miles above RSE. In fact, most RAW convertors have come a long way in the past year. If Pixmantec were still in buisness, I'm quite sure RSE would have kept up. Anyway, Bibble was well worth $70. Much higher quality output and more powerful than most other convertors.

Oh I have been shooting JPEG, just trying to expand my capibilites.  Going to a singing competition where I can shoot but without flash, and i wanted to shoot raw to be able to lighten up afterwards.

Just an FYI, I didn't want to bother Dan, so I did a search for RSE on the internet.  You can just go here to download RSE if you're interested in it: http://www.cdifoto.com/rse.php
