    Need help with event......

I will be shooting a pageant in a couple of weeks and need some help.  I shot it last year and had really bad shadows behind the contestants.  I was shooting vertical without bracket, so I understand why I had shadows then.  But I have since picked up a bracket and still get shadows occassionally, plus I don't like how fast it zaps my batteries in the flash.

Quick layout.......Pageant is in a high school gym, stage is located at one end.  The front of the stage is fluch with the wall so there is an extension to the stage sticking out about 5-6 feet, the width of the stage.  There is also a little catwalk extension directly in the middle for the contestants to walk out on that is approximately 10-15 feet long and about 4 ft wide.  I will be standing on the gym floor anywhere from a couple of feet to about 20 feet from the contestants, free to roam around.  The main lights in the gym are turned off.  The stage lights are on and two big spot lights will be aimed at the contestants one from each side and behind me(as long as I stay in a certain area, I don't create shadows in the spots).

Even with subjects several feet away from backgrounds, walls, etc., I still get shadows occassionally.  What can I do to avoid or soften this.  I have considered Lightsphere and a couple of others, but have been told that the distance between me and contestants would make diffuser worthless.

Please help, I need to figure this out soon and I'm not sure how to fix it.

    Thanks

can you post a pic when they are away from walls and you are still getting shadows, that may help the group diagnose it!  :)

Maybe I am missing something here but what has using a bracket got to do with zapping batteries?

Anytime you are using a flash, you are going to get shadows,  To avoid them as much as possible, you need to be sure the flash is directly over the lens.  I use a Stroboframe R7 that I have had for many years and the flash is about a foot above the lens.  Because of the height of the flash, the shadows drop down farther behind the subject and are not as noticeable.

What equipment are you using?  Flashes can be told to do many things, and many of the default things are not what a new user might expect.  For instance, the default setting in many instances is to expose for the background.  This lowers the shutter speed so that the camera still tries to get the background exposed correctly and adds only enough flash to fill in for the subject in the foreground.  Since your background is exposed properly, you can see it - and the shadows you cast on it.  Another setting sets the shutter speed much faster and uses the flash to expose correctly for the subject, which often leaves the background just plain black.  Black doesn't show shadows and this may be what you want.  You may want to try shooting in shutter priority for this, but I don't know what equipment you are using and how it defaults.  You can read your camera and flash manuals and they will explain this for you.

Also, faster lenses may be an option.  If you are shooting below f/2.0, and the subject is lit very well, you may not need the flash at all...

What I meant about the bracket zapping the batteries is this.  When I use the flash bracket I have to change batteries in the flash at least twice as often.  Not a problem, just really annoying, especially in the middle of pageant.

My equipment:  300D, 28-135 lens, Quantaray Digital flash.  I used to get mixed results using the TTL mode so pretty much always use Manual mode.  However, lately have been playing around with TTL and getting better results than in the past.

    Thanks

I don't mean to hijack, but I have been considering some sort of diffuser as well(I've heard good things about Lightsphere, and have been told the one that looks like a mini softbox is the best).  Is distance really an issue?  I mean, I know the farther away, the less effective they are, but how far is too far given the above situation?

I have Gary Fong's Lightsphere-II and I love it! It really does help with the shadows, and although it looks like a piece of plastic you could mold at home it is so totally worth it! I'm actually shooting my first pageant with it March 17.  I shot one in November and couldn't believe the shadows behind the contestants! I took the money from that and ordered one ASAP! Here's a link and they show examples on the page! HTH!! http://store.garyfonginc.com/liiido.html
