    resolution

My camera shoots at 32x48 -72

it crops evenly to a 4x6  mathmatically wise-so I think I do nothave to crop but...

To print on mpix do I need to change the res to 300 or go ahead and crop it to a 4x6 which ups the res by itself??

    Re: resolution

    Hi Julie,

Do know if I can help much, but, I can tell ya what I do and have been told to do by several pro photographers.  When I am getting my pics ready to send to MPix, I crop them in Photoshop to whatever size the customer orders and ALWAYS set my resolution at 300, that way I won't loose any resolution as I crop to whatever size. Hope this helpsHmm

we talk about this  about 3 times a week here.

As far as mpix is concerned, the 300 is irrelevant. It would possibly make a difference on your home ink-jet printer. The file size is what matters, just upload them and print. If the file size is too small mpix will grey out the options for that size of print.

Not really, your camera shoots at 2304 pixels by 3456 pixels. Your software opens the image at 72 ppi which is what it thinks your screen resolution is.

it crops evenly to a 4x6  mathmatically wise-so I think I do nothave to crop but...

Yes that sizes, not crops, to a 4x6 because the aspect ratio, think shape, of your sensor is the same as a 4x6 print.

To print on mpix do I need to change the res to 300 or go ahead and crop it to a 4x6 which ups the res by itself??

When you crop you are removing pixels which decreases the resolution, not really a good thing. What you want to do is to resize the image smaller without changing the number of pixels. When you do this the PPI (Pixels Per Inch) will increase because you have the same number of pixels but fewer inches.

To do this in Photoshop you go to Image Size and uncheck the box at the bottom that says "Resample Image" then change either your size in inches or your resolution, when you change either one of these the other will automatically change too because you are working with a fixed number of pixels.

You do not want to change the number of pixels unless you have and only do it to a copy of the file you have saved.

What a help trwheels! I did it!

So for the best clarity you want to take the picture as close as you can so you can just resize and not crop!  I think I get it!  I have always been a big cropper but now I understand a better way to do it!!  Then if I have to crop it won't be taking as much out of the picture if I shoot close to what I want!

I shoot families on the beach mostly  and never know if they want 4x6's up to 20x24's  The norm is 5x7's and 8x10's

Do you do a lot of cropping??

I try to do as much composition in the camera as I can and shoot as tight as I can. When I do crop it is usually to improve the image, I often do not go with standard size prints since I print my own stuff mostly.

If your "norm" is 5x7 and 8x10 then you need to be composing in the camera at 1:1.25 and not at 1:1.5 (8x10 vs 4x6) as these are differently shaped images.  Your viewfinder is 1:1.5 (4x6) so you need to not close-in on your subject if you're going to want a 1:1.25 final output.  It sounds odd at first, but a 4x6 is bigger than an 8x10 - with the aspect ratio that your camera shoots, some cropping will be essentially in order to print on an 8x10 canvas.

    Re: resolution

The "what to crop to" issue has been around as long as there have been prints of different sizes. It's not practical to have multiple copies of the same image for cropping, so I crop to 4x6 and internally (i.e., in the photo) leave enough room for an 8x10 to come out OK. I don't shoot terribly tight in order to leave room for the inevitable 4x5 or 8x10.

Don't crop for 4x6 or any ratio of 2x3 like 8x12
    Simply upload and continue
