    Flash units for digital photography

I am new to the Forums as a writer. I have read a few of them before and found them helpful. My question for everyone out there is what type of flash you would recommend as a starting flash unit. Recently I started taking photography as a business and have found that there are more and more photography equipment pieces that I need. There is not a lot of money in the budget to splurge so I have to start out slow. I shoot mainly outdoors but have a need for a fill flash with low light situations. The flash on the camera is just not sufficient enough.  I do most of shoots at the beach, castle ruins, and parks in Okinawa Japan.

Overall, what type of a flash is recommended as a flash for a Canon 400D that is good to start out with on a budget?

I'd recommend a Sigma 530DG Super. It's about the same price as the Canon 430 (around $200) but has more power and more features that you'll grow into.

The Canon is easier to swivel / tilt (a single button vs separate buttons) but the extra power is always welcome.

If you can stretch the budget, the 580ex is never a bad choice. (It's about $400 though).

If you're familiar with running manual mode, you can't beat the Vivitar 285HV for value. It's $90 brand new, and has an automatic mode that you match up to your ISO and f-stop. We used them for years with the older Canons because the original E-TTL was so unpredictable.

    Hope this helps!
