Well, I am pretty sure I have told this someplace before, but I am an OB/labor & delivery nurse and rotate to nursery and postpartum nursing in our small local hospital. Four years ago I fenaggled a new position out of the floor/hospital and became the newborn photographer and now run or manage that ongoing project, that being my primary job. The pay is great and I get benefits, so I am happy. To go into my own business, I am seriously thinking about it, though the hospital keeps me busy I'm not sure I'd have the time to do it anytime soon.

I use to be a preschool teacher in the mornings and a daycare worker in the afternoons. When I started my photography business I quit the daycare and was just a preschool teacher. Then we moved and all I did was preschool. Now we have settled and I have started my business again. Our deal was, the hub would be our source of income. Any income I make from our photography business goes back to equipment and if any left over goes to pay off debt and eventually, as we build it up, the money will go toward other things like, special vacations and savings for emergancies. I started hating photography when we lived in the big city and decided if I did it again that it would have to be for "fun." We could not work it for our main income like last time. Ever since I have appoarched it without expecting to make enough to pay the bills I have loved it even more and family and friends are always telling me, they see a passion for it that they hadn't seen before, or that they hadn't seen in a long time. My mother says I've got my style back.
I've decided to do mine seasonly. So I operate from February to September for Weddings. Locally I only do mini sessions (rented space for a few hours), Santa Portraits, and am trying to get in with Daycares, Preschools, and Dance Studios for the fall and winter months.
During the school year I will have a preschool. This will be a source of extra income for us that will go toward bills cause hub's job is seasonal too. This is of course if we have our own house by next fall (oh I pray we do.) Our goal is to work enough during the summer/fall that we will be able to survive the winter without a lot of income coming in.

Gman...I always enjoy your creative responses!
I work at a law office during my boys' school hours. My attorneys are good to me and let me come and go for my kids and sessions or whatever I need to do. I file in photography where ever else I can. I would rather be doing it more...but trying to maintain that harmonious balance has been tricky lately. Even though I have two jobs, I still consider myself a stay-at-home mom...because I guess that still seems like my main job. My law office job will cease over the summer so that I can be out with my boys. I'm looking forward to having a little more sanity back...well...maybe.

I'm a photographer. I had planned on doing it only part time, but things never work out exactly as planned, so it's turned into a full time job.
During the day I edit, print forms, pack the folders that go with me to the flag football and soccer shoots and sort and fill orders.
During the evening I am in the field - mostly soccer right now, but flag football is in season, also and I have about 10-15 teams to cover.
On Sunday - it's normally bull riding, engagement or family sessions. I get bored easily, so shooting a variety of things keeps life interesting.
Things have been really busy this year and life seems to be moving faster than ever - but so far, I haven't ended up moving so fast that my feet can't keep up with me - so I'm doing good! Better than this guy, anyway!

Ok I'll chime in now. I usually read more that write as you can tell by the number of posts I've made. But this is really interesting to read about all of you. My Full time job is a firefighter/EMS I've been doing this for about seventeen years. I used to paint (houses) on my days off until taking pictures got to become more of a part-time than painting did. Who knows, maybe even one day I can retire from the FD and become a photographer full time.

I work in the legal department for mortgage. Not my dream job but it's perfect for me at this point. If I ever get good in photography that's what I will love to do full time.
It's nice to see all the different jobs on here.

Day job - (not literally) - flight attendant ( stewardess, airline hostess, whatever). I only work the international flights out of Newark and with my seniority I am able to hold a pretty nice schedule - at least 15 days off a month. Love it.
Years ago, the airline I work for went into bankrupcy. Even though I had a degree in Nutrition, I wanted something else to fall back on, so I went to school for photography and art history. I got my degree and the airline bounced back - so I stayed doing what I love and added another passion to my life. Photography has been in my life many years and allows me creative expression as well as a way to justify the time I spent studying it. I don't think I will ever want to do it solely as a full time job, because I think I would stop enjoying it as much as I do.
This forum is a wonderful motivator and a place to connect with others that surround their lives in some way or another with the art of photography.
Sue (ps Using wifi on my laptop in my room outside of the Heathrow Airport - England - tv is dull, not into my book, I'll watch my netflix movie later, or I guess I'll check out the mpix forum )

I knew from an early age that I loved photography. I also love science. I thought it would be wise to combine the two and do x-rays for a living. It has been a great decision. I have been in the x-ray/ct field for 15 years and I still love it! I love the association with patients. I work nights and by myself. I which means that I have to know how to do whatever is needed. I spend most of my time working with patients that come to the ER. I have also logged a lot of time in surgery. I love the trauma cases and the unusual stuff. It is fun to get into the action. Twice in the last 10 years I have had the opportunity to put my hand through an incision into a mans chest and squeeze his hart to keep blood circulating. When you get an opportunity to do something increadable like that, you have to do it. You may never get to again!
I do photography also. I enjoy the technical stuff about it. I also like to be more creative than my x-ray/ct job offers, and it is nice to do something for people because they want you to, not because they need you to.
