How to Process this for Printing...

A few weeks ago I did some newborn portraits for a good friend of mine.  She loves them, her hubby loves them and I'm processing the ones they want to get them ready for printing. I did a test print at my local Costco because I was trying to decide whether or not to use a skin softening filter very slightly [baby acne].  I've decided against that BUT I'm really glad I did the test print since my black muslin background is not printing properly.

Now my monitor isn't the best, but it is calibrated [huey].  The hex value of parts of the background ranges from 0B0B0F to 010101 (or RGB 768 to 111).  However visually it reads as black on the monitor.  In print it looks like a dark green brown with black banding across the top.  Ugly!

Now, it appears that I did not uncheck Auto Correct, but somehow I don't think that's the whole problem. I would like to get some other opinions before I do another test print.  Perhaps it is the whole problem, since the skin seems a bit blue to me as well.

We're putting together a pretty large order so I want to make sure it's right before we do it.  :-)

     Regards,

     Diana

Well, I wouldn't rely on Costco prints especially if that is not going to be the final printing lab, Plus if you had auto-correct checked it can lead to some nasties, especially in blacks .

I looked at the numbers for you background and they all look pretty good with a slight high in blue (only 3 points) The worst point being close to the top of her head but still not bad

I would grab your eye dropper in Curves or levels and click it on the background and it all evens out.

Thanks Moose. I honestly didn't know Auto Correct messed with blacks badly. My Costco usually gives me very good test results to judge my post-processing on.  I was really happy with how well I had managed this shoot and not having a bunch of spillover onto the background.

    Does this thumb look better?

Usually when you see Brown/ Green for black shows that the exposure was boosted by the Printer/lab which happens a lot when you have a lot of Black in an image cuz the auto wants to make up for all that black.

It looks good to me and printed fine on my Canon Photo printer...looked all black

Do another test at Costco with the Auto off
