My process. I do this for each session and each wedding.
-Burn RAW files to DVD (DVD holds a LOT more than a CD)
-Back up RAW files to external hard drive
-Process them
-Burn JPGS & small JPGS to DVD (or CD, if they will fit)
-Use multiple DVD/CD's if necessary
-Back up JPGS to external hard drive
-For most weddings, I try to make two copies of each, and put one in my fire-proof safe, and another in the client's hard copy file
-Delete RAW files from my hard drive
-I usually keep the JPGS on my hard drive until after the initial order, and then delete those
By the end of it, everything is on at minimum an external hard drive and one set of DVD/CD's.
As for buying external hard drives, I get mine at Staples when they are on sale. Last week they had a 500gb one for under $100.
