Strobist.com is all about working with off camera flash.

I'm not aware of any reason you can't use the 380 with a wireless trigger like a pocket wizard, or the ebay triggers.  Do you have triggers?

 If you wanted to use the 380  as part of  a wireless syetm with the 580 as  a master. It wouldn't work since whenthe 380 was manufactured it used a corded syetm for multiple flash usage.

And if you wanted to use the 380 as part of a Wireless system with say Pocket wizards, the problem would be there is no Manual mode ion it to adjust the power up and down and it would just fire at full power...But that may work it would just not give you as much flexibility to have both flashes at different powers.  But I guess if you had  the 380 at full power you could power down just the 580 to give your different flash ratios.

You may just be better off getting either another 580 or get a Cheap good flash Like a Sunpack 383 or vivitar 285HV

 If you are stuck with one power setting you could also change the distance between flash and subject to adjust power.

Another option here if you did use the 380 is to move it farther away from the subject to reduce power and close to increase power.  Some guess work involved but it is an option.  In the old days photographers use to hang strings from there lights that were certain lengths so they would know how far there lights were from subjects and then use formulas to calculate the power they would get using the guide numbers.
