Maryanne, my guess i that your first shot was p&s, second was dslr? Just a guess. I will def do this one. What sort of editing is permited if any? Some we can, some we can't..., so what's the scoop on this one?

Eric, you're right. I believe someone else said it in this post that the color and depth of field gives the p&s away. I believe editing is allowed. I did the same editing on both photos - levels, curves and sharpen. I would think too much editing or editing only one would ruin the whole point of the thread.

I've been reading sharing and critiques for a couple of years, but just found the tutorials! I'm so excited about the summer school lessons, I've gone back and printed them all out to study. I can't believe how generous you all are with your knowledge and experience. I really must say a big thank you to all you Mpixers!
I'm an amateur, so I'm not saying this is professional level, but the old Canon Powershot G5 (circa 2004-ish?) did all right. (My 30D should arrive tomorrow...very exciting!) There was a money shot in this setting somewhere, but heck if I could find it! I shot in auto and did some cropping and sharpening. Here goes!

Re: Subbin Again: Summer School #9, P&S to make a point
I'm gonna cheat on this one too, these were both taken before today. Both with my Canon Powershot A570 IS... a versatile P&S, but a P&S all the same. Can I admit something... I don't even have a DSLR yet... I'm still saving up. While I'm saving up, I'm reading and reading and learning and wishing so bad I could practice on it, but I'm broke right now, man. I think I'm about as amateur as it gets on this board. Kind of embarassing
All I did on this one was soften the background a bit...

This one obviously I converted a bit. But that's it.

Laurabelle, you could have told me that that first one had been shot with a canon 1D camera instead of a p&s, and I'd have believed you. Just goes to show, it's not the camera.

I wish there was a fainting smiley on here - that's about as close as I could get haha. You guys just made my day, seriously.

Dave! What a great thread!
I just returned from the Dominican Republic where I took tons of pictures and some will suit this assignment (once I sort through all of them. we were there for 8 days). I'm afraid to take my Nikon D50 onto the beach for fear of sand so I take our little $100 P&S for the on-the-beach and in-the-water pics. (It's got an underwater housing on and that was including in the price!) I'll try to post some shots soon!

Re: Subbin Again: Summer School #9, P&S to make a point
Let us remember also the point of a point and shoot camera is to have a camera handy.
not to point and shoot a picture but to make an image that is at least the starting point for the final image.
I had my Canon SD1000 in my pocket at dinner last week. My nephews get a bit restless so I took them on a walk while the folks finished dinner in some peace.
these show what you can do with a bit of consideration of the scene
They thought that curb was installed just for their seating pleasure.
I thought "oh cool" for the first shot, then went and sat beside them for the second.

these are the full frames.
I guess my point is, get the picture, but don't forget to make the image.
Try to use your small camera like it was your big camera.

Ok - I know I am late, but my models are not always cooperative! I am sure you have heard that excuse before, but it was the only one I could come up with. I did a little bit of pp - I forgot to set the WB with the DSLR but I was shooting in RAW so I fixed that and did a little cropping, but that was basically it.

Re: Subbin Again: Summer School #9, P&S to make a point
These were shot back in 2003 with the same camera that was in the article that DaveW mentioned...the Olympus C5050 Zoom. It was a good camera for the era, but again, the camera is only the tool...not the artist. All that said, one neat feature of the camera was that it had an f/1.8 lens. Pretty rare to see that wide of an aperture even now in P&S. Market has driven longer zoom factor and megapixels...not parameters like wide aperture or lens sharpness that can have a much more tangible impact on the look of an image.
