    Assistant Photographer

Sorry for the empty post...........it's been forever since I have been on!!!

I hired a second shooter for a Wedding in July and I am needing her again for a Sept. Wedding, she owns her own photography business, so I knew

I would be getting quality images from her. She did ask me about what kind of exposure will she get from being a second shooter, so I was wondering what other photographers do about this! I didn't know if it was appropriate to put her name and business in the contract, or what I needed to do, any help is appreciated!

    Thanks guys!

she doesn't get exposure as a second shooter. if she agrees she is basically becoming a temporary employee of yours so her name doesn't go on anything. she should however be able to use the photos on her own site, blog, and portfolio.

I agree. I second shoot for Wendi quite a bit and also have my own business. She is paying me to be there and I don't expect there to be any mention of my business. I am allowed to use my photos that I shoot, but if I blogged them I would mention that it was a wedding that I shot with her with a link to her site.

I've *been* a 2nd, and I've hired 2nds.  As a 2nd, I am being hired by the main photographer and it is expected that while in that role I will do everything I can to promote her business.  I hand out the primary photographer's business cards, tell them how to access images online, etc.  I once hired a 2nd who, much to my dismay, handed out *his* cards while working for me - not good!  Make sure your 2nd understands what you expect while they are working for you!  On the other hand, as a 2nd I've been able to use the images I take to build my own portfolio up.  I don't think this is the norm though....?

I'm a second for a mpixer (Erik)  I am able to use my images in my portfolio and I just reference that I second shot the images with him and list his website on my website.

"Self-imposed limitations can be as crippling as debt. Photographers who have convinced themselves that clients won’t pay what is a reasonable price for their photography, often are merely projecting their own self-limiting values, but this can be a critical business mistake. A businessperson must be confident that he or she is providing value to clients, and that clients, in turn, will exchange that value for their hard-earned money. If this confidence is lacking, it is difficult to become successful in business......." because if you do EVERYTHING else right you are still DOA if you don't see the value of your work
