PHOTO CHALLENGE #3 - CLOSED FOR ENTRIES

Here we go with the third challenge in the series.   The challenges are going to continue to get more and more difficult but if you will enter them, you will find them getting easier and easier for you to do.  We will add an additional judge for this challenge and I will reveal that judge later.

Please pay special attention to ALL rules.  Failure to follow any of them is automatic disqualification from the challenge.

The challenge begins now (time of this post in MY timezone) and will end at midnight (MY timezone - CENTRAL) on February 15th.

    Here are the rules:

    Challenge # 2 - NO COLOR "FOUND"

    BASIC GUIDELINES

1 - The image must be full frame (no cropping allowed) and should be between 560 px and 660 px on the LONGEST side.   Failure to follow this rule will cause immediate disqualification of the image.
2 - Borders are allowed but please see the additional information in the CHALLENGE below.
3 - Image must be created within the dates of the challenge.
4 - You must email me the original image before conversion to  lowryw (at) gmail (dot) com.  You must also include your Mpix username in the email.  The original image must be SOOC with no resizing.  It must be converted to jpeg before sending.  Do not send me RAW files.  We will be able to tell by the EXIF data if it was truly done full frame.
5 - Please read the specific challenge rules below.

    THE CHALLENGE

This is a two part challenge, the image then the B&W.

Part 1 - The image is one you find, something that happens without your influence. It can be a person, place, thing or any combination of the three. You are not allowed to pose or move the subject or modify the light, the image has to be like you found it.  Full frame with no crop either horizontal or vertical with no border or text other than a small copyright notice in either the lower right or left corners, "your name © 2010", you may also add a thin black border around the entire image of up to 4 pixels wide. No post processing except what is allowed below.  Compositional rules will apply but it will be up to your interpretation for this challenge.

Part 2 - The image must be B&W and exhibit a balance of tonal range, detail and contrast. You can adjust the color and density overall to the color version, do a conversion of your choice then adjust the contrast and density of the B&W version overall. No localized adjustments or other post processing not specifically mentioned here.  NO TONING OR COLORING ALLOWED.  You may use any conversion method you choose including convert to greyscale, channel mixer or others.

    Images will be judged on:

     (1) Following the basic rules of the challenge.
     (2) Uniqueness of subject matter.
     (3) Quality of the conversion of the image to BW
     (4) Compositional rules

PLEASE NOTE:  POST THE CONVERTED IMAGE ONLY.  WE ARE ONLY CONCERNED WITH THE END RESULT AND NOT HOW YOU GOT THERE.  WE WILL POST THE BEFORE PHOTOS FROM THOSE THAT WIN THE CHALLENGE.

    Have fun!!!
Remember, it is all about image. You don't have permission to "play" with mine unless I specifically say so.

This is one of the purposes of the challenge.  Taking you out of your comfort zone and trying new things.

Out of my comfort zone doesn't even BEGIN to describe where this challenge takes me.  I think it'd be fair to say that I'm in over my head on this one! :o)

     Lowry,

By you saying that the light can not be modified, does that mean no flash?

Does this mean no text in just in the image, or in the entire post? I assume from the context that it is referring to the image, not the entire post, but I was afraid to title mine because I thought I might be wrong.
