    credit card question

anyone ever have a company cancel your credit card for inactivity? I just found out that my best buy card has been essentialy canceled because I havent used it in a long time, and I will have to reapply to get it reinstated. it seems a little crazy to me, it isnt a card you would use all the time.

Yep...  In fact, I know I've got a Nordstom's card in my dresser that's no good...  I got it back home in NY, moved here, where there isn't a store, and didn't use it a looooong time,  Thought of it on one of my last trips back to NY, and called to check on it...  canceled due to inactivity.  Oh well.

Think of it as a good thing... do you really want open credit lines sitting around that you never even look at?

    Re: credit card question

It may not be a bad thing but the main reason I got it was to build credit, and of course be able to purchase expensive electronics without paying for it all at once or without high intrest charges. Now that I want to use it again I cant, it just seems to me like poor customer service. Makes me feel like they dont want my biz kwim? Oh well, I wonder if my hubby's is still active.

Yes have had it happen before. most company's do this. You could call it bad customer service but if you never use it then how much of a costumer are you? Also to build your credit you have to use it, doesn't do your credit any good just having a card sitting around. Still sucks when you are ready to use it and find out its cancelled. have also had them lower our balance because of inactivity. we bought our entire kitchen with an Ikea card then paid it off in like two months. then 6 months later got a letter saying they had reduced our credit limit down to a few hundred dollars. Sucks

I did use it once when I bought my camera, in fact I maxed it out. It is just kinda annoying,  I bet my dh's card has been deactivated too we havent used it in ages either, so i guess i will have to reapply because I want to buy a flash and they have the 18 months no interest thing going on now. glad to know it has happened to others.

    Re: credit card question

Unfortunately this is just one of the Many Crimes of credit card companies these days, even after the latest Credit Card legislation, they are highly unregulated and corrupt. I hate to tell you this when you do reapply it will be a  a much reduced credit limit and also a higher interest rates ( interesting that interest rates are at an all time low, yet credit card interest rates are at an all time high)

They are just out of control and basically can do what ever they want, even things like universal default, If you default on one credit card, they ALL can raise your interest rates even if you are current with the others.

    It's an unbelievable shame.

    Re: credit card question

Same happened to me last year.

I went to buy a laptop computer, case, printer well, the whole kit and caboodle and only to find out my card was cancelled THREE day's before. THREE day's! Yea! Cancelled due to inactivity. I had to put that purchase under my Radio Shack card which totally sucked because of their interest rates. Not that it matters. I have a 100% payment record and all my cards got jacked up anyways. All the responsible card owners are pulling the slack for all those defaulting.

And to say it does not affect you is incorrect. It does affect you when a card is cancelled, When a card is canceleld it lowers the debt to available credit ratio available to you which in turn knocks down your credit score

If you re-apply, then chances are it will be handled by Chase. I have a Best Buy card and it is currently being handled by HSBC. However, I was notified about six weeks ago that my Circuit City card is being rolled over to Best Buy and that card is now being handled by Chase, not by HSBC. The letter I received stated the conversion would happen sometime within January/February of this year.
