I have never used filters on my lenses unless they were specialty filters (star, soft focus, etc.) in the film days. I know that most digital images benefit from 'haze' sharpening. Anybody have any preferences on using filters on lenses and why or why not. I know we all say I would rather ruin...

It is f/4, but it's WA, therefore intended for shooting at smaller apertures, so no problem here, plus it's superior in build and picture quality, also can be used not only on crop sensor cameras...

...and I swear I have searched/read tons of posts on the subject, but I still have a lens question. :-) I'm going to be purchasing the Rebel XTi w/ the 18-55mm lens that comes with it. I'm also getting the 50mm/1.8. I don't know what those numbers mean haha but after doing some research here...

Try using the Canon 85mm F1.8 lens. Wide open at F1.8 will give you the shallow depth of field you want to blur the background. Although this lens does not have an image stabalizer, it is small and compact and easy to hold with your Rebel.
