I'm looking for any tips on shooting a group of 6 adults and 4 small children outside in the snow. The background the family wants is mostly woods. There is supposed to be quite a bit of snow. I'm planning on using a ladder -if possible because of the number of people. My concern is losing highlights...

I'm an avid amateur photographer who's been asked by a coworker to take her kids' portraits, after having seen some that I did of my own. I have no special training or equipment (I shoot with a Nikon D70 with an 18-55mm and/or 85mm lens) so I'm a little nervous about her expectations...

What qualifies a picture as a portrait? I like this expression, but it bothers me that you can see so little of the right side of his face. What do you think? What about this one?
